Major Homer K. Fielding Rebels Report

Rebels vs. Crush
Saturday, March 27th (12:00 pm)

W 2-1

Howdy!

You have seen me around before but we haven't met. I am Homer K. Fielding, a Major in the Confederate Army. I am indeed an expert on softball and a world-class rebel. I am also affectionately known as your logo.

Today was the opening day of softball season. The Rebels were in fine form!! I had the privilege of attending the opening day parade and the game, so I thought I'd report my findings (I am also Chief of Intelligence and Covert Operations in my outfit). I like to call this game recap the Rebels Report.

The Rebels sure looked intimidating this morning as they lined up for the parade. Wearing scary eye-black paint and bandanas (and we're still not sure what Coach Rodney had on his head), the Rebels were a sight to behold. The fans were indeed amazed by the attitude and spirit shown by the Rebels -- if they only knew how the Rebels would respond in their first game! On to the game report...

The Rebels took the field first since they were home team. The Rebel defense was pumped, and Alyssa wasted no time. Three huge strikeouts to start the game!! Wow! So the Rebels struck on offense. Allie stepped up first. She lifted a high fly ball that the third baseman snagged for an out. Apparently Lisa was such a copycat that she also popped up the third baseman! With two outs, Alyssa came to the plate. She smoked a single up the middle. Then Kaiti strode to the plate. She wasted no time in cracking a single to the left side of the infield. Still with two outs, Ashley came to the plate. She fought off some good pitches, then finally dribbled a hit in front of the plate. That'll work! Bases loaded and two outs... Kathryn came to the plate. The Crush pitcher really bore down and threw some heat. Kathryn went down swinging, but she certainly wasn't scared by the pitcher! Hey, did anyone see Coach Rodney strike out in the coaches' game? By the way, he also scored from second base and slid into home for the first score of his game! I see no one is particularly interested in Coach Rodney's game, so back to the Rebels Report. The score stood 0-0 after one inning.

The Rebels hit the field for the second inning. It was time to play tough defense, a time for major fielding! (Did someone say Major Fielding? -- that's me!) The Crush cleanup hitter smacked a single and took second on the throw. Apparently that made Alyssa mad, so she hit the next batter (just kidding!!). Still with no one out, the next batter cracked a grounder to Alyssa. She wheeled and fired to Kristen at first. Kristen was able to make the play and get an out, but a run did score. Alyssa then struck out the next batter. With two outs and a run in scoring position, the batter lifted a high fly ball towards the pitcher. Alyssa and Ashley both closed on the ball and Alyssa gloved it for the third out! In the bottom of the second, the Crush pitcher got tough. Brittany and Elizabeth went down on strikes (but again, they were *not* intimidated by the opposing pitcher!). Mary Cameron was able to get contact -- unfortunately she grounded to second base, who made a nice play to throw out Mary Cameron. Oh well... After two innings, the Rebels trailed 1-0.

In the third inning, tough Rebel defense kept the Crush from scoring. After an opening hit and steal, Alyssa struck out 2 batters. It was again time for Major Fielding ("Yes sir, ready for action sir -- oh, you don't mean me, sorry"). This time the major fielding was provided by Kaiti at third base. The batter lined a rocket towards the hot corner -- Kaiti calmly caught the line drive for the third out!! Yea! In the bottom of the third, three Rebels went down swinging (Deneé, Lisa, and Alyssa). Allie did manage a pretty double, but she was stranded... We headed to the fourth inning still down 1-0.

In the fourth, the Rebels hit the field (unfortunately, they left their brains in the dugout during the first play!). A simple single by the leadoff hitter plus lots of throwing the ball around by the Rebels (probably just so I could be sure to list everyone's name in the report) put a Crush runner at third base and no one out. Gulp! We sure didn't want that run to score! Alyssa helped take care of that by striking out the first two batters. The final batter hit a screaming ground ball to Ashley at second base. Ashley confidently snagged the ball and tossed to Allie for the third out! Big time play! OK, this is getting serious...the Rebels need some runs! In the bottom of the fourth, Kaiti led off with a hit and stole second base. The rally fell short again as three Rebels whiffed (Ashley, Kathryn, and Brittany). On to the last inning, still trailing 1-0.

In the top of the fifth, the Rebels shut down the Crush one more time. Highlights included Kaiti catching a fly ball at third base for an out and Alyssa striking out two batters. On to the Rebels' last chance... We needed one run to tie, 2 runs to win. Mary Cameron and Elizabeth came to the plate and made some excellent cuts, but unfortunately fell on strikes. Down to our last batter, Deneé. She got a hit and made it to first base. Yea! Then she stole second base -- double yea! OK, we have the tying run in scoring position. Back to the top of the lineup and Allie. With ice in her veins, Allie cracked a beautiful double to plate Deneé and tie the game! Yippee!! Up steps Lisa, who played copycat in the first inning. Could she do it again? Lisa judged balls and strikes very well and then took her chance against the ever-tough-but-lovable Coach Bob. Coach Bob laid in a strike that Lisa absolutely tagged for a hit. Coach Rodney was jumping out of his skin as he waved Allie around third base. Allie scores! Rebels win 2-1!! WOW!!! What a way to start the season! A last-inning comeback!

I have the pleasure of announcing the heroic Rebels for today's game. I like to call them Homer's Heroes. There were lots of great plays and clutch hitting, but today belonged to the last-inning clutch hitting provided by Deneé (who scored the tying run) and Lisa (who brought home the winning run)!! What a great game girls!! Congratulations to Deneé and Lisa, today's Homer's Heroes!

Your faithful Rebel Reporter,
Major Homer K. Fielding
